Summary

Students with disabilities can benefit from using a variety of computer, information and adaptive technologies. The goal here is to provide a demonstration of some of the possibilities. On display will be software and hardware that assist students with various impairments (e.g., low vision, blindness, learning disability, mobility and neuromuscular impairments, deafness, hearing impairment).

Both videotaped and live demonstrations of novel uses of mainstream technologies as well as of adaptive technologies and hardware will be made. The goal is to demonstrate the ABLE part of the concept of disABLED by showing how students can use available computer, information and adaptive technologies to succeed in postsecondary education.

Among the technologies to be demonstrated are : magnification and large print programs, screen readers, Braille and voice software and hardware, programs to assist people with learning disabilities, input devices for people with limited use of their hands, adaptions for people with hearing impairments, and the use of an inexpensive video camera to communicate and collaborate on the Internet using sign language.

A videotaped presentation will demonstrate the use of computer, information and adaptive technologies by students with disabilities. Team members with expertise in the use of these technologies will be present to answer questions. Handouts will complement our display.
